CXC CSEC results came in — tips for anyone still studying

Got my CSEC results last week — passed 7 subjects with grades between 1 and 3. Maths was my biggest concern going in and I ended up with a grade 2, which I'm genuinely shocked about because I was scraping 55-60% on past paper questions as recently as 6 weeks before the exam. The last push made a real difference.

For anyone still in the prep phase, the thing that moved my maths score the most was going through past papers by topic rather than year by year. When you do full papers, you naturally rush through the topics you're comfortable with and never really fix the weak ones. Sorting by topic — sequences, circle theorems, vectors — and drilling each one for 2-3 days straight is slower but way more effective.

English A was the other subject I was nervous about. The comprehension and summary sections are fine if you practice, but the essay section is where most of my friends struggled. I'd recommend doing a CXC practice test under timed conditions at least 4-5 times in the month before the exam — the time pressure on paper 2 is real and you need to build the habit of moving through it without second-guessing every paragraph.

Biology was probably my smoothest subject despite expecting it to be hard. The specimen-based questions were straightforward if you'd actually read the syllabus objectives carefully — a lot of my classmates missed questions that were basically straight from the objectives because they were reading textbooks instead of the CXC syllabus document itself.

English A paper 2 time management is brutal. I failed my first sitting partly because I spent too long on the summary section and had to rush the essay. Second time I set a hard 35-minute limit on summary and stuck to it no matter what. Passed with a grade 2.

Congrats on the grade 2 in maths! That's a real achievement if you were at 55-60% six weeks out. The topic-by-topic drilling advice is exactly what my tutor told me and it's the only thing that finally made circle theorems make sense for me.

Grade 2 in maths and 6 other passes is a genuinely strong CSEC profile. That opens up a lot of CAPE and tertiary options. Well done.

The syllabus document tip is underrated. I wasted so much time on content that wasn't tested because I was using a textbook that covered more than the syllabus requires. Once I switched to syllabus-first studying, everything became more focused.

Sitting my resit for Chemistry next sitting. Hoping the same approach works for the calculation sections.
