Finally passed my CWS exam after failing twice — here's what worked

I want to share my experience because I wish someone had told me this stuff before I wasted six months studying the wrong way. I'm a certified welding inspector at a structural fab shop and my company pushed me to get the CWS certification. Failed the first attempt with a 68 (passing is 72) and the second time I hit a 70. I was ready to give up honestly.

What finally clicked was switching from just reading the AWS reference materials to actually doing timed practice. I found a solid CWS practice test that simulated the real question format — metallurgy and weld symbols killed me on my first two attempts because I'd memorized definitions instead of learning how to apply them. The study guide I'd been using was way too surface-level on SMAW and FCAW process variables.

Third attempt I scored an 81. If you're preparing for this cert, what study materials are you using? Happy to share more specifics on the topics that tripped me up.

Congrats on passing! The weld symbol section is brutal if you don't practice drawing them out by hand. I spent about 40 hours total studying over 8 weeks and made a point of doing practice questions every single night for the last three weeks. The metallurgy portion on HAZ characteristics was the one that surprised me — worth spending extra time there. What practice test site did you end up using?

Failed my first attempt last year too. Don't let it get to you — a lot of experienced welders underestimate the exam because they assume hands-on time substitutes for the theoretical stuff. It really doesn't. Good luck to everyone studying right now, keep grinding through those practice questions.

This is really encouraging. I'm scheduled for my first attempt in about six weeks and I'm honestly nervous. My background is mostly GMAW so some of the other processes feel foreign to me. One exam tip I got from a coworker was to pay close attention to preheat requirements and how they relate to carbon equivalent — apparently that shows up more than people expect. How many questions did you feel genuinely unsure about?
