Working in wildlife management and our state is expanding CWD surveillance. I've been asked to get certified in CWD sample collection and handling. The state vet's office sent information about a training program but I can't find much about what the certification actually involves or how to prepare.
Has anyone gone through state-level CWD technician certification? What did the practical and written components cover?

CWD tech training typically covers: understanding prion disease basics, proper lymph node sampling technique (retropharyngeal, medial retropharyngeal), sample chain of custody, PPE requirements, and lab submission protocols. The written portion tests this knowledge.

The practical component is usually observed sample collection on harvested deer. If you have any anatomy background it helps significantly. Most states offer hands-on training before the practical assessment.

Check with your state wildlife agency directly — the certification requirements vary significantly by state and some have very minimal formal requirements while others are more rigorous.
