I have the option of taking my (CMC) Certified Master Chef exam online at home or going to a testing center. Trying to figure out which is better for me.
Arguments for online:
- No commute stress
- Familiar environment
- More flexible scheduling
Arguments for testing center:
- No home distractions
- More controlled environment
- Better equipment potentially
My main concern with the online version is proctoring — I've heard some certification exams have very strict rules about what's allowed in the room. One wrong move and you're flagged.
Has anyone taken CMC both ways? Or specifically the online version? How was the experience? And does the difficulty or question format actually differ based on how you take it?
Also — any issues with the "CMC" type content being harder in one format vs the other?

I just passed mine last month, took it at a testing center. Honestly the format difference didn't matter nearly as much as I expected — what actually got me through was doing timed practice runs a week before. Like, full sessions where I treated it as the real thing, no pausing, no looking stuff up. That clicked something for me.
If you're someone who freezes up in unfamiliar places, go online. If your home is chaotic, go to a center. But either way, don't skip the timed practice. That's the real difference-maker.
