I have the option of taking my (CMC) Certified Master Chef exam online at home or going to a testing center. Trying to figure out which is better for me.
Arguments for online:
- No commute stress
- Familiar environment
- More flexible scheduling
Arguments for testing center:
- No home distractions
- More controlled environment
- Better equipment potentially
My main concern with the online version is proctoring — I've heard some certification exams have very strict rules about what's allowed in the room. One wrong move and you're flagged.
Has anyone taken CMC both ways? Or specifically the online version? How was the experience? And does the difficulty or question format actually differ based on how you take it?
Also — any issues with the "CMC" type content being harder in one format vs the other?
The free cmc culinary techniques food preparation helped me understand what the exam actually tests rather than just what the material covers.
The honest answer is: it depends a lot on your background.
If you're already working in this field, the CMC exam is testing knowledge you probably use daily. The "CMC" sections will feel familiar.
If you're coming in from outside, give yourself an extra 2 weeks and really focus on the practical application questions.
The practice tests here are worth doing repeatedly — I did the same test bank multiple times and found new questions I'd missed each time.

Coming back to this thread — just passed my CMC yesterday. Everything about the cmc practice test section is accurate. For anyone still studying, the free cmc kitchen leadership and sanitation was the closest thing to the real exam I found.
