Failed CTS exam twice — what finally worked for me third attempt

So I finally passed my CTS last month after two painful failures and I wanted to share what actually made the difference because I was seriously considering giving up. First two attempts I scored a 68% and then a 71% — so close both times. I'd been using the AVIXA study guide but honestly just reading through it wasn't cutting it.

What changed everything was finding a decent CTS practice test that simulated the real pacing. The exam moves fast and I wasn't prepared for that mentally. I did timed practice sets every single day for three weeks straight, about 90 minutes each session. I also stopped trying to memorize everything and focused on understanding the signal flow and AV math concepts deeply — those show up constantly.

For anyone just starting out, the exam tips I wish someone had told me: don't skip the AV math even if it scares you, and read every question twice before answering. Passed with an 82% on attempt three. Happy to answer questions about my study approach.

Congrats on passing! I took mine back in 2023 and yeah the pacing was a shock. What helped me was treating the study guide less like a textbook and more like a reference — I'd identify weak spots from practice questions and then go look them up. Also joined a study group through an AV Facebook group which helped a ton for accountability. Different approach but same idea of building actual understanding vs memorizing.

This is so encouraging, thank you. I'm scheduled for mine in six weeks and the AV math is killing me. Can I ask which practice tests you used? I've been through the official AVIXA prep materials twice and I still don't feel confident on the calculation questions. The signal flow stuff I get but ohm's law and decibel math just don't stick for me.

The AV math advice is spot on. I'd add: make sure you know your aspect ratios and throw distance formulas cold. Those came up way more than I expected on my exam. Good luck to everyone prepping — it's totally passable if you put the time in.
