So I've been a rec therapist for three years and kept putting off getting certified because honestly the whole process felt overwhelming. I failed my first attempt back in January — scored a 94 when you need a 104 — and I was pretty demoralized. The domains I bombed were Assessment and Treatment Planning, which are supposedly the heavy hitters on the exam.
What turned things around for me was being way more systematic this time. I spent about six weeks studying, roughly 45 minutes a day, and I actually prioritized a solid CTRS practice test routine over just re-reading my notes. Doing timed question sets helped me realize I was misreading scenario questions — I kept picking what I'd do instead of what the ATRA guidelines say to do. Big difference.
Anyone else retaking or prepping right now? Happy to share my study guide breakdown and some exam tips that actually helped versus the ones I wasted time on. Especially curious if others found the ICF framework as confusing as I did at first.
