CTE certification — which track and how long does it take?

I teach automotive technology at a community college and I've been asked to get my CTE credential to meet new state requirements for career and technical education instructors. The process seems pretty involved — there are multiple tracks depending on your industry background and I'm not entirely sure which one applies to me.

My background is 12 years in automotive repair (ASE Master Tech), and I've been teaching for 3 years. From what I've read, the CTE certification for technical instructors in transportation programs requires a combination of work experience documentation, a pedagogy component, and in some states an exam. Is the exam the hard part or is it the documentation?

I'm in Ohio and the state CTE requirements seem slightly different from what federal CTE guidelines say. My department chair told me I should have no problem meeting the experience threshold but the pedagogy coursework could take a semester.

Has anyone gone through the CTE credentialing process while actively teaching? I want to know what the actual time burden looks like week-to-week.

I went through Ohio CTE credentialing in 2023 as a welding instructor. The experience documentation was actually the easy part — you just compile your work history and certifications. The pedagogy coursework was 3 semester hours and I took it online through Ohio State's extension program. About 6–8 hours per week.

ASE Master Tech is a strong credential for the documentation component — that background is exactly what the state wants to see for transportation CTE instructors. You probably already meet the occupational experience requirements without any additional work.

The exam portion, if required in your district, is mostly about teaching methods and CTE program administration rather than automotive content. If you've been teaching for 3 years you'll find a lot of it familiar. I passed it without specific exam prep just from practical teaching experience.

Quick update for anyone following this thread. I'm coming from the automotive side too, so I'm on the industry experience track, and honestly it wasn't as scary as I built it up to be in my head once I actually started studying. I just took a full-length run through the free cte professional experience set last night and scored an 82, which is the first time I've cracked 80. The questions about documenting your work history and verifying your hours were the ones that kept tripping me up early on, but it's finally clicking.

I'm giving myself two more weeks to firm up the weak spots and then I'm sitting the real thing. If you're on the same track, don't sleep on the experience documentation part. That's where I lost the most points at first. Good luck, you've got this.
