Got my CTB results yesterday and I passed, but my typing accuracy score was lower than I expected — 94% when I usually test at 98%+ in practice. Nerves definitely played a factor. The whole thing took about 2 hours including the break and it's pretty mentally draining, especially during the data entry sections.
The clerical checking portion moved fast. I had 60 items with what felt like maybe 4-5 minutes — I don't remember the exact time but it felt very rushed. I've taken similar tests for other job applications and this one is on the harder end for time pressure. If you're not used to working at that pace, you'll struggle more than you expect.
What helped me most was practicing with actual timed drills every day for 3 weeks before the test. Not just sitting at my desk typing normally, but structured exercises where I'd push my speed slightly above my comfort zone, then back off. By test day, working under pressure felt more normal.
The math reasoning section was lighter than I anticipated — basic arithmetic, some simple word problems. Nothing you'd need to review much if you've got a solid foundation. Focus your energy on the speed-accuracy balance for the clerical portions instead.
Is there a standardized score or percentile they give you, or just pass/fail? I have mine coming up in two weeks and I'm not sure what to expect from the results report format.
The math section being light is reassuring — that's the part I've been most anxious about. Going to redirect that study time to speed drills now.
94% accuracy is still really solid under actual test conditions. I took the CTB for a county government position last spring and the data entry section is where most people lose points. Good job getting through it.
The time pressure on clerical checking is no joke. I failed my first attempt primarily because I tried to go too fast and made careless errors. Second attempt I slowed down about 10% and actually scored better overall.
