CSX railroad training test — what does the hiring process actually look like?

Applied for a conductor trainee position at CSX and got a call back. They mentioned there's a written test and a physical exam as part of the hiring process. I've never worked for a railroad before — coming from trucking/logistics background.

Does anyone know what the CSX written test covers? I've heard it involves math, reading comprehension, and some mechanical aptitude. My trucking background should help with some of it but I want to prepare specifically.

Also how long does the whole hiring process typically take from application to start date?

The written test has basic math (fractions, percentages, distance calculations), reading comprehension with safety-procedure type passages, and a mechanical aptitude section. Your trucking background will definitely help with the practical reasoning parts.

The hiring process at CSX can run 2-4 months from application to start date. There's usually a background check, drug test, physical, and union paperwork in addition to the written test. Don't quit your current job too early.

Study basic railroad terminology before the test — terms like consist, lading, intermodal, etc. show up in the reading passages and knowing them speeds up comprehension significantly.
