CSWE accreditation — how does it affect MSW program choice?

Applying to MSW programs this cycle and trying to understand what CSWE accreditation actually means practically. All the programs I'm looking at have it but I want to understand why it matters — specifically whether licensure boards in different states require it and whether employers actually check.

I'm planning to do clinical social work (LCSW track) in California after graduation. Does CSWE accreditation from a non-California-based school create any complications for California licensure?

CSWE accreditation is required for LCSW licensure in California — full stop. If your school lacks it, you cannot become licensed. All accredited programs are treated equally by the BBS regardless of which state the school is in.

The practical difference between CSWE programs is usually field placement quality, faculty research, and specialization tracks — not the accreditation itself. Once you've confirmed accreditation, focus on those other factors.

California BBS also counts supervised hours differently depending on whether they were pre or post-degree. Worth reading the current BBS requirements before you start your program so you plan your field hours strategically.
