CSS certified sanctions specialist — passing score and exam experience?
I've been working in compliance at a regional bank for about three years and my team lead is pushing for the CSS cert. I've been doing OFAC screening work specifically for about 18 months so the sanctions content isn't new to me, but I'm not sure how deep the exam goes beyond what I encounter day-to-day.
Currently at around 71% on the practice questions I've found. The OFAC regulatory framework and SDN list mechanics are my strengths — probably 82% in those areas. Where I'm losing points is the multinational sanctions regimes: EU, UN, OFSI. We almost never deal with those at my institution so my knowledge is pretty thin there.
Planning about four weeks of prep at 90 minutes per day. Is that enough, or does this exam require more depth than someone with my background might expect?
The EU sanctions and OFSI questions tend to be more conceptual than the OFAC stuff — they test whether you understand the framework and designation process rather than specific list mechanics. If you spend a week just reading the official EU and UK guidance documents it'll cover most of what's tested.
Four weeks at 90 minutes is plenty. I passed after three weeks coming from a similar background — strong on OFAC, weak on international regimes. The non-OFAC sanctions sections are probably 30-35% of the exam so you can't ignore them, but you don't need expert-level depth either.
Your 71% baseline is strong. Most people I know who passed were in the 68-73% range on practice going in. The real exam felt slightly easier than the prep materials in my experience — the questions were very applied but the scenarios weren't trying to trick you.
Don't underestimate the correspondent banking and de-risking questions — those showed up more than I expected and aren't always covered well in standard prep materials. Make sure your study plan includes at least a few sessions specifically on that area.
