I've been in commercial construction for 9 years, currently a project manager at a mid-size GC. My boss keeps pushing me toward the CDT first and then CSI membership. I looked into it and the CSI certifications seem like they'd actually be useful for specs and documentation work but I'm not sure if the study time is justified given my workload.
Anyone here gone through the CDT or CCS who can speak to whether it actually opened doors career-wise? Or is it more of a checkbox thing that sounds good on a resume but doesn't change your day-to-day?
Also, how hard is the CDT realistically if you already have practical experience? I read construction documents daily but have never formally studied the spec writing framework.

Did my CDT 4 years into my career. Honestly it changed how I read specs forever — I started catching errors I used to miss. Whether it opens doors depends on your firm but the knowledge itself is worth it.

The CDT exam is harder than people expect if you haven't studied the MasterFormat and SectionFormat structures. Practical experience helps a lot but there are specific format rules that you need to study. Figure a solid 6-8 weeks of focused prep.

For project management specifically the CCS might be more directly relevant than CDT. CDT is more for spec writers. Worth asking your boss which one they actually value for your role.
