Finally passed CRPA on second attempt — what actually made the difference

So I failed my first attempt back in February by 8 points and honestly wanted to give up. I'm a prevention specialist with about 4 years of experience and figured my fieldwork would carry me through without much studying. Big mistake. The exam is way more focused on theory and ethical frameworks than I expected, especially around CSAP standards and evidence-based practices.

What turned things around for me was actually committing to a structured CRPA study guide instead of just reviewing my notes from trainings. I spent about 6 weeks, roughly 45 minutes a day, and made sure I understood the competency domains — not just memorized them. The CRPA practice test questions I found online were helpful for getting used to the wording, which is oddly specific in ways that trip you up.

Anyone else retaking it or currently prepping? Happy to share what resources I used. The ethical scenario questions were the hardest for me — wondering if others felt the same or if the content areas hit differently depending on your specialty area.

Congrats on passing! I'm sitting for mine in July and the ethics section is exactly what I'm dreading too. I've been using a mix of the IC&RC candidate guide and some exam tips I found on a test prep forum. My goal is to not need a second attempt, so I'm probably over-studying at this point — 60-70 hours deep already. Did you find the scenario questions followed a predictable pattern or were they pretty varied?

Eight points off is so close, I feel that. I failed by 4 the first time and was devastated. Second attempt I focused almost entirely on the domains I scored lowest on rather than reviewing everything equally. That targeted approach saved me a lot of time. You'll do great going forward.

The wording thing is so real. I passed on my first try but there were at least a dozen questions where I second-guessed myself purely because of how they phrased things. My advice: read every answer choice fully before committing. And don't let your clinical instincts override what the 'best practice' answer is supposed to be — that disconnect got me early in my practice tests. What was your score first vs second attempt if you don't mind sharing?
