Failed the CRP by 4 points the first time (71% vs the 75% pass mark) and honestly couldn't figure out where I went wrong. Second attempt I changed my whole approach and passed with an 84%. Figured I'd write up what made the difference since I wish someone had told me this before attempt one.
The biggest issue first time was studying research methods in isolation - memorizing definitions and processes without connecting them to research ethics and IRB stuff. The CRP really tests whether you understand the whole ecosystem, not just methodology. Second time I studied the Belmont Report and research ethics guidelines in parallel with every methodology topic.
Time investment: first attempt was 6 weeks at 1.5 hours/day. Second attempt was 8 weeks at 2 hours/day with a much more structured schedule. I used the MREF study guide plus supplemental reading from the Handbook of Research Methods.
The quantitative analysis section catches a lot of people. It's not super advanced stats but if you haven't touched regression analysis in a while, refresh it. That section alone is worth about 18% of the exam.
Passed on my first attempt at 79% and I'd echo the ethics point. I had a research coordinator background so the practical stuff was easy but the regulatory compliance questions were harder than expected.
The 8-week timeline at 2 hours/day is a solid target for most people.
What was the breakdown of question types on the actual exam? The practice materials I have seem light on applied scenarios.
Thanks for this breakdown. I'm about 5 weeks out from my first attempt and the quantitative section is exactly where I'm weakest. Spending this week on stats review.
Did you use any specific practice question banks or just the official materials?
The ethics integration point is spot on. I went in thinking it was a separate section and it shows up woven through everything. Had a similar first-attempt experience.
