CRL exam income expectations — worth pursuing in my market?

I'm a journeyman locksmith in Ohio with 6 years of experience and I'm weighing whether the CRL certification is worth the time and cost. My shop does residential and commercial work and I've been thinking about pushing into higher-margin institutional and government contracts, which seem to favor certified locksmiths.

Before I commit to the prep, I want to understand whether the CRL actually translates to better pay and contract access in the Midwest, or if the real gains are mostly in larger coastal markets. I keep reading general claims about income improvements but haven't found numbers specific to my region.

I also found a useful breakdown on locksmith income trends that suggested certified locksmiths earn 18-23% more on average — curious if that matches what people in this field are actually seeing or if that's inflated.

Exam prep aside, I'd like to hear from CRL holders about whether the credential has changed the type of work they can bid on.

The institutional and government contract angle is real. I'm in Michigan and once I got my CRL I started landing school district and county courthouse contracts that explicitly required ALOA certification. That alone justified the credential within 18 months of getting it.

Ohio has enough municipal and institutional facilities that the CRL pays off. Columbus and Cleveland especially have active procurement systems that tier vendors by certification level. Getting on those approved vendor lists is where the real value shows up — not just a percentage wage bump but a whole different category of contract size.

The 18-23% income figure is plausible for someone making the strategic shift from residential to commercial/institutional. It's not automatic — you still have to pursue those contracts — but the cert removes a barrier that was previously blocking you from even bidding. In smaller Midwest markets the competition for institutional work is lower than coastal cities, which actually works in your favor.

Quick update: just cleared 86% on my most recent CRL practice set using crl practice test pdf. Sitting for the real thing in 4 weeks. Feeling cautiously optimistic.

Great discussion. One thing nobody mentions: sleep the night before matters more than one more study session. Went in fully rested for my CRL and felt sharper than expected.
