Failed CRFA twice — what finally helped me pass on attempt three

Okay so I've been putting off writing this post for a while but I figure if it helps even one person it's worth it. I failed the CRFA twice before finally passing last month. First attempt I scored a 68, second time a 71 — so close but not close enough. I genuinely didn't know what I was doing wrong because I felt like I was studying constantly.

What changed for the third attempt was actually being more strategic. I stopped just re-reading my notes and started drilling with a CRFA practice test almost every day for the last three weeks. Timed conditions, no phone, treating it like the real thing. My weak spots were food safety regulations and the allergen management sections — I had no idea how much those were weighted until I started tracking my wrong answers.

I also picked up a structured CRFA study guide that broke everything down by domain instead of just chapter-by-chapter. Huge difference. Anyone else here gone through multiple attempts? What finally clicked for you?

Three attempts takes guts to push through — seriously. A lot of people just give up after two. That persistence is exactly the kind of mindset food safety managers need anyway. Good luck to everyone still in the process!

Congrats on passing! I'm in the middle of my first attempt prep right now and the allergen section is killing me too. I've been doing about an hour a day for six weeks and honestly the practice tests were the wake-up call I needed — I thought I knew the material but my first mock score was a 61. Now I'm consistently hitting 78-80 so fingers crossed.

The food safety regulations tripped me up as well. One thing my instructor told me: don't just memorize temps and times, understand the WHY behind each rule. Once I understood the reasoning it all stuck way better. Also highly recommend doing exam tips review sessions on YouTube the night before — not for cramming new stuff, just to calm your brain down and reinforce what you already know.
