Took the CPRE exam last month - tips from a first-time passer

I passed the CPRE exam on my first attempt last month and I'm still kind of shocked, honestly. I've been in parks and recreation administration for 14 years, but the exam covers a breadth of leadership, finance, and governance topics that goes well beyond day-to-day operations. My score was 73% — passing is 70%, so I didn't have a ton of cushion, but a pass is a pass.

The finance and budget sections were harder than I anticipated. I manage a department budget of about $2.8 million annually, so I wasn't going in blind, but the exam asks about financial analysis concepts at a level that goes beyond what most administrators deal with operationally. I'd spend extra time on capital improvement planning and fund accounting if those aren't areas you're deeply familiar with.

I used the NRPA study guide as my primary resource and supplemented with about 200 practice questions. The official guide is worth reading cover to cover even if some sections feel redundant — the exam leans on specific language from it. I studied for 14 weeks at about 5-6 hours per week, which probably sounds like a lot but this is a legitimately difficult exam for most people.

Strategic planning and board relations questions made up a bigger portion than I expected based on what I'd heard from others. If your background is more operational than executive, those are the areas to build up before exam day. The HR and personnel management sections felt very manageable by comparison.

The board relations questions surprised me too when I took it. There's a whole governance philosophy embedded in those questions that's distinct from how most of us actually interact with our boards day-to-day.

Congrats! I'm sitting for it in 6 weeks and the finance section is my biggest concern. Good to have confirmation that it's worth taking seriously. Did you find any supplemental resources beyond the NRPA guide?

73% with 14 years of experience tells me this exam is genuinely rigorous. I've been downplaying how much study I need and this is my wake-up call to get more structured about it.

How long did it take to get your results after the exam? I've heard it varies and I have a job application deadline that depends on having the credential documented.
