CPPS exam — is there an actual exam or is it mostly a portfolio submission?
I've been a professional speaker for 8 years and I've heard about the CPPS credential but I'm fuzzy on what the actual assessment process involves. Some people describe it as a knowledge exam, others say it's heavily portfolio and peer evaluation based.
I do keynotes and corporate training primarily. My speaking fees are in the professional range but I've never formally tracked the metrics that certification bodies usually want — audience size, bookings per year, revenue thresholds.
Is this credential worth pursuing for someone whose income is already established, or is it primarily useful for breaking into higher tiers?
For established speakers the value is often about market positioning rather than skill development. Some corporate clients, especially in regulated industries, use it as a screening criterion. If your target market includes those clients it's worth the credential.
The CPPS is primarily a competency-based credential rather than a traditional knowledge exam. The assessment evaluates your speaking competencies through a combination of materials, evaluations, and potentially a live or recorded evaluation depending on the certifying body's current process.
Start tracking your metrics now even if you don't apply immediately. Audience numbers, engagement metrics, client testimonials, and booking history are all things you'll need to document. The application process rewards people who can demonstrate impact systematically.
The CPPS practice materials here helped me understand the competency framework before I applied. Knowing what specific skills are being evaluated let me frame my portfolio materials much more effectively than I would have otherwise.
