CPCS exam — how deep does it go on NPDB reporting requirements?

I've been in medical staff credentialing for 6 years and I'm finally sitting for the CPCS next month. Most of the content feels familiar from daily work but I'm genuinely unsure how deep the exam goes on specific database systems and technology tools like CAQH ProView. My job uses it constantly but knowing how to operate it in practice isn't the same as knowing exam-level detail about it.

I've been studying with the NAMSS online prep course and I'm about 70% through it. Practice scores are running 74-78% on the quizzes, which I think is okay, but I don't have great calibration on what the actual exam difficulty looks like. The NAMSS prep questions feel a bit straightforward compared to what I've heard about the real exam.

The areas I feel weakest in are the legal and regulatory sections — specifically NPDB reporting requirements, sanctions, and the nuances of when reporting is mandatory vs. discretionary. That stuff isn't something I deal with daily since my current facility has been pretty clean. I'm thinking I need at least 8-10 hours specifically on NPDB regulations before exam day.

Does anyone know roughly how many questions touch on technology systems specifically vs. process and regulatory knowledge? I'm trying to figure out if I'm over-indexing on the database stuff or if that's actually a significant exam focus.

Six years in credentialing is a big advantage — a lot of the scenarios will feel familiar even if the specific question framing is new. Don't underestimate how much your practical experience helps you eliminate wrong answers quickly without second-guessing yourself.

74-78% on NAMSS prep is a good sign. I was around 76% in prep and passed the actual exam on my first try. The real exam questions are scenario-based and a bit more nuanced, but your practice scores suggest you have the foundation you need.

NPDB is definitely worth the study time you're planning. The mandatory vs. discretionary reporting distinction trips people up, and the timing requirements — 15 days for hospitals, 30 days for other entities — show up on the exam. Know the reporting triggers cold before you walk in.

The CPCS isn't very heavy on specific technology platforms — it's more about process and regulatory framework. CAQH might come up in the context of primary source verification but you won't be tested on specific product features. The exam is designed to be vendor-neutral.

I’m testing this summer as well after 5 years in credentialing. I work in the CVO for a major medical center. I purchased the NAMSS downloadable study guide but not the prep course. I’ve been using Quizlet & just stumbled on this site about 3 weeks ago. I’m super nervous. Everyone has told me the test is hard. But I think I’m doing OK with study prep. Thank everyone for the study suggestions in the comments. If anyone has more please do share. I have another 5 weeks before I test to continue to study.
