Took the CPCE in March and failed with a 68% when you need 75% to pass. It's frustrating because I've been in catering and events for six years and still blanked on beverage management questions I should know cold.
This time I studied 2.5 hours a day for 8 weeks, focusing heavily on financial management and event logistics since those were where I dropped the most points. The NACE materials are decent but they don't cover beverage ratios nearly enough.
Scored an 81% on the retake. Menu costing formulas came up at least 4-5 times in different forms. If you're weak on food cost percentages, nail those before test day.
Anyone finding the event design section more conceptual than the practice questions suggest? I felt underprepared for those even after 8 weeks of studying.
I used the NACE flashcard deck every morning for 6 weeks. The repetition on food safety HACCP questions paid off on exam day more than anything else I did.
The beverage section tripped me up too. About 30% of my questions involved alcohol service liability and I wasn't ready for that at all. Spent too much time on catering contracts instead.
2.5 hours a day is about right. I tried 4-hour weekend sessions and it didn't stick nearly as well as consistent daily review.
Event design questions are deliberately vague. They're testing judgment calls more than textbook answers and there's not much you can do to over-prepare for that section.
