Failed cosmetology state board twice — what study method actually works?

I'm honestly embarrassed to even post this, but I failed my state board practical AND written for the second time last month and I'm at my wits' end. I graduated from cosmetology school back in February, I thought I had a decent handle on things, but the written section keeps tripping me up — especially sanitation/disinfection procedures and the chemical services questions. My school gave us some review sheets but they're pretty thin and I don't think they're covering everything that shows up on the actual exam.

I've been looking into using a COSMETOLOGY BEAUTY practice test to drill the written portion more systematically before my third attempt in July. Has anyone actually improved their score significantly by doing timed practice tests? I've also seen a few study guide options online — worth buying one or is free material enough? I really need to pass this next time because my job offer at a salon is contingent on my license. Any advice from people who've been through this would mean a lot.

For context I scored a 68 on my last written (need a 75 to pass in my state) so I'm close but clearly missing something in how I'm preparing.

Honestly the study guide I bought wasn't worth the $40. Most of the exam tips I actually used came from free YouTube walkthroughs and just grinding practice questions online. The written section is very pattern-heavy once you do enough questions — you start recognizing how they phrase the wrong answers. Also don't overlook anatomy and physiology, I underestimated that section both times I struggled and it cost me points I didn't expect to lose there.

I was in almost the exact same spot — scored a 70 my second attempt and finally passed on my third with a 79. What changed for me was doing timed practice tests every single day for three weeks straight, not just reading notes. The repetition really locks in those sanitation codes and infection control rules. I also made flashcards specifically for chemical services because that section is brutal. Give yourself at least 90 minutes of focused study daily and you should see improvement fast.

You're so close — a 68 to 75 is totally doable in a few weeks. Focus your last push on disinfection levels (EPA-registered vs hospital-grade vs sterilization) because that stuff shows up constantly and trips people up more than anything else. You've got this, third time is the charm for real.
