Finally passed my COHN exam after two attempts — here's what worked

I've been a school nurse for about six years and my district has been pushing hard for us to get certified. Took my first shot at the COHN back in February and missed by 11 points — honestly devastating after three months of prep. The thing that tripped me up was I was mostly reading the NASN textbook cover to cover and barely doing any practice questions, which was a huge mistake.

Second attempt I completely changed my approach. I found a solid COHN practice test site and drilled about 20-30 questions every morning before my shift. That repetition helped me recognize the way the questions are worded, which is really different from just knowing the content. I also made a one-page study guide for each domain — community health concepts and case management were my weakest areas.

Passed with an 82 last month. The exam tips that helped most: read every question twice, eliminate the obviously wrong answers first, and don't overthink scenarios. Happy to answer questions if anyone else is in the middle of prepping!

Congrats! I'm scheduled for mine in August and the two-attempt thing is real — my coworker also had to retake it. I've been using flashcards for the legal/regulatory stuff since that section always seems to catch people off guard. Did you find the community health domain questions were more case-based or more definition-heavy? That's the piece I'm most nervous about.

Eleven points the first time and then passing with an 82 — that's a big jump! Proof that test strategy matters as much as content knowledge. Saving this thread for when I finally register. My manager has been on me about it for two years now, no more excuses I guess.

This is so encouraging to read. I passed mine in 2019 and the practice question approach is 100% the right call. The COHN exam isn't testing whether you can memorize a textbook — it's testing clinical judgment in context. I'd also recommend reviewing the role delineation study for the version of the exam you're taking because the domain weights shift between updates.
