Finally passed the CO exam — here's what actually helped me

I've been lurking here for months while prepping for my Certified Outfitter exam and honestly this community kept me sane. Passed last week with a 78 — not a perfect score but I'll absolutely take it after the stress of the past three months. I work full-time guiding river trips so study time was hard to carve out.

The biggest thing that moved the needle for me was committing to a structured CO practice test routine every other day in the final three weeks. I was failing those mocks badly at first — like 52% — and it was brutal but it exposed exactly where my gaps were. Safety regulations and liability sections wrecked me early on. The study guide I was using glossed over those topics and I had to go find supplemental material.

For anyone starting out: don't underestimate the exam tips you'll find in threads like this one. The actual test has a lot of scenario-based questions, way more than I expected. Budget 8-10 weeks minimum and drill your weak areas hard the last two weeks. Happy to answer any questions about the process!

Congrats on passing! The scenario questions got me the first time I sat for it. Honestly the best advice I got was to treat each practice question like it's the real thing — no peeking at answers until you commit. I went from a 61% on my first mock to passing with a 74. The liability and environmental compliance sections are where most people lose points in my experience.

The scenario questions tripped me up too on my first attempt. One thing that helped: read the question stem twice before looking at the answers. The wording is tricky and they love to add details that seem irrelevant but actually change the right answer completely.

How long did your actual test take? I'm sitting for mine in six weeks and I keep hearing wildly different things about the time pressure. Some people say they finished with 30 minutes left, others say they were scrambling. Also — did you use any specific study guide or just the official materials? I feel like I'm drowning in resources right now and can't figure out what to prioritize.
