CMP exam passed first try — breakdown of what I studied and what I skipped

Passed the CMP about three weeks ago after 10 weeks of prep. I'd been in event management for 7 years before sitting so I had solid real-world experience, but the exam is different from just knowing how to do the job. The way questions are framed tests whether you know CIC-standard terminology and process, not just whether you've done something similar in practice.

I spent about 90 minutes a day on weekdays and 3-4 hours on Saturdays. The Events Industry Council manual was my primary resource. I read it cover to cover once, then went back through the sections I was weakest on. Financial management and meeting design were my strengths going in. Strategic management and risk management needed the most work.

My practice test scores were around 71-73% for the first 5 weeks, then jumped to 82-86% in the last 4 weeks once the terminology really clicked. The exam felt fair — no trick questions, but you need to know the specific EIC definitions for terms that might mean something slightly different in common usage. Don't assume your industry experience means you already know what a term means on the exam.

Finished with about 15 minutes to spare on the 2.5-hour exam. I flagged 18 questions for review and changed my answer on 4 of them. Two of those changes were correct, two weren't. First instinct is usually right.

The terminology thing caught me on my first attempt. I'd been doing events for 12 years and felt overconfident. Failed by 6 points because I kept picking answers based on how I'd been trained at my company rather than EIC standards.

The EIC manual is dense but it's really the only source you need. I supplemented with the MPI study guide and it didn't add much. Just go deep on the official material.

How heavily tested was sustainability and CSR? I've been spending a lot of time on that section but I'm not sure if it's worth the emphasis I'm giving it relative to the financial management content.

15 minutes to spare is solid. I finished with 8 minutes left and was sweating the whole time thinking I was going too fast. Ended up passing at 82% so the pace was fine. Don't rush but don't overthink each question either.
