Passed the Certified Meeting Manager exam last month after 14 months of study and one failed attempt. Sitting for this one is not something you do casually — the breadth of content is real.

The CMP body of knowledge covers strategic meetings management, financial planning, site selection, event design, risk management, and stakeholder communication. The risk management section has expanded significantly in recent years. Spend more time there than you think you need to.

I used a study group of 4 people from our MPI chapter. Meeting weekly for 2 hours kept me on track and exposed me to how other planners think through problems. The exam includes a lot of scenario-based questions where industry experience actually helps you eliminate wrong answers.

About 8 months in — overconfident. I had covered all the content but had not done enough practice with scenario questions in timed conditions. The second attempt I simulated exam conditions every weekend for 6 weeks leading up to it. Very different experience.

14 months is a serious commitment. Was the failed attempt early in your prep or closer to when you felt ready?

The MPI study groups are genuinely one of the best resources out there for this exam. The community knowledge you get from experienced planners talking through scenarios is worth more than most prep books.

Risk management section really has grown. After COVID, crisis communication and contingency planning became a much larger part of the body of knowledge. Make sure your study materials are recent — anything pre-2021 is missing content.
