Finally passed my CLS exam after failing twice — here's what worked

I'm not going to sugarcoat it — I failed the CLS exam in September and again in January. Both times I walked out thinking I'd done okay, which honestly made it worse. Third attempt is scheduled for next month and I've completely overhauled my approach.

The biggest change was actually doing a proper CLS practice test under timed conditions every single week instead of just reading through my notes and feeling good about it. Feeling comfortable with material and being able to retrieve it under pressure are completely different skills. I'm also working through a structured study guide that breaks down hematology, urinalysis, and blood bank separately — those were my weakest areas both times.

Has anyone else struggled specifically with the blood bank section? My exam tips from a coworker were mostly about time management but I feel like I need deeper content help there. If you passed recently, how many hours a week were you putting in during the final stretch? I'm currently doing about 10-12 hours and wondering if that's enough.

Blood bank was my nemesis too, no joke. What helped me was making ABO/Rh compatibility tables by hand over and over until it was automatic. I also found that practice questions — not just reading — exposed gaps I didn't know I had. Took me about 90 hours total spread over 8 weeks before my pass. Hang in there, the third time really can be the charm.

I passed in March on my first attempt but I'll be honest, I almost canceled because I didn't feel ready. The timed practice tests were the single most useful thing I did. I also made sure to review CE unit calculations and quality control rules because those showed up more than I expected. What study guide are you using? Some are way better than others for this particular exam.

10-12 hours a week sounds solid for the final month. Don't underestimate sleep the week before — I crammed the night before my first attempt at a different cert and completely blanked on stuff I knew cold. You've got this.
