Finally passed my CLC exam — here's what actually helped me

After two failed attempts and a lot of frustration, I passed my Certified Lactation Counselor exam last month and I just want to share what finally clicked for me. I'd been studying off textbooks alone and honestly they weren't cutting it. My scores on practice questions were hovering around 62-65% and I needed at least 70% to feel confident going in.

The biggest shift was switching to a CLC practice test format that actually mimicked the real exam structure. Timed sections, clinical scenario questions, the whole deal. I also found a solid study guide that organized the IBLCE competency areas in a way that made sense — milk production physiology and infant assessment especially tripped me up before.

My timeline was about 10 weeks of serious prep, maybe 8-10 hours a week. Anyone else currently studying for this? Happy to share more specific exam tips if it helps. What topics are you struggling with most?

Congratulations! I sat for mine back in February and the clinical scenarios were no joke. I kept second-guessing myself on the latch assessment questions. What I found helpful was drilling case studies until they felt automatic — like, don't overthink the theory, just trust your clinical reasoning. Also make sure you're solid on the WHO/UNICEF guidelines because those came up way more than I expected.

10 weeks is about right in my experience. Don't cram the last few days — your brain needs time to consolidate. Sleep the night before, seriously. I bombed my first attempt partly because I was exhausted from last-minute studying. You've got this.

This is so encouraging, thank you for posting! I'm scheduled for August and honestly terrified. I feel okay on anatomy but the pharmacology and contraindications section is killing me. Did your study guide cover drug compatibility with breastfeeding in depth? That's the piece I feel weakest on. Also how many practice questions did you do total before you felt ready?
