Failed CLAST twice — finally passed after changing my study approach

I'm not going to sugarcoat it: I bombed the CLAST two times before I finally figured out what I was doing wrong. The first time I walked in completely unprepared, figured it couldn't be that hard since it's a college placement exam. Wrong. The second time I crammed for a week straight and still missed the math cutoff by 4 points. I was honestly embarrassed to tell my advisor.

What finally worked was being really systematic about it. I found a solid CLAST practice test site and started timing myself on each section instead of just reading through questions casually. That changed everything — turns out I was spending way too long on the essay and rushing the math. I also picked up a study guide that broke down the essay prompts by type, which helped me stop panicking when I saw the prompt.

Anyone else here preparing for the CLAST right now? Happy to share what worked for me. The reading comprehension section especially has some weird question styles that tripped me up until I figured out the pattern.

The timing thing is huge — I totally relate. I passed on my second attempt too and honestly the biggest exam tip anyone gave me was to treat each practice session like the real deal, timer running, no looking anything up. The math section covers some pre-calc stuff that caught me off guard, so if you're rusty on quadratics definitely brush up. Good for you for sticking with it though, a lot of people just give up.

Six weeks is actually a comfortable timeline if you stay consistent. I'd aim for 45 minutes a day rather than long cramming sessions — retention is way better. Focus the first two weeks just on diagnosing which sections are weakest, then go deep on those.

Can I ask what study guide you used? I've been searching around and there's so much conflicting info out there. I'm taking mine in about six weeks and I'm most worried about the essay. My writing is decent I think but I always freeze up under pressure. Did you do timed essay practice or just read sample responses? Also how many hours a week were you putting in leading up to the test?
