Finally passed CIPP/US after two attempts — what actually worked for me

So I just got my results back and I finally passed the CIPP/US on my second try. First attempt I went in way too confident after just reading the textbook once, scored a 68 and needed a 75 to pass. Embarrassing honestly. This time around I gave myself 8 weeks, spent about 90 minutes a day, and completely changed my approach.

The biggest difference was actually doing practice questions instead of just re-reading material. I found a solid CIPP practice test that had scenario-based questions similar to what you see on the real exam — that's where I noticed I was weak on state law preemption and the FTC's role. The IAPP study guide is dense but it's worth reading chapter summaries before diving into full sections. For exam tips that actually helped: don't memorize statutes, understand the *why* behind each regulation.

Anyone else currently studying for CIPP? Happy to share more about what resources I used or which topics caught me off guard. The privacy law landscape changes fast so make sure whatever materials you're using are current.

Congrats! I'm sitting mine in about six weeks and honestly this is exactly what I needed to hear. I've been doing the same thing — just reading — and I keep blanking on the application questions. Which topics do you think showed up most on the actual exam? I've been spending a lot of time on GLBA and HIPAA but wondering if I'm neglecting something.

Second attempt success stories are genuinely encouraging. I failed mine last year and took a long break. My issue was timing — I'd spend too long on hard questions and rush through the easy ones at the end. Did you do any timed practice sets, or just untimed question banks? I feel like time management killed me more than content knowledge.

The scenario-based questions are no joke. Real exam feels nothing like just knowing definitions. Practice under exam conditions as much as possible — that's what finally clicked it for me too. Good luck everyone still studying!
