Finally passed CIH after two attempts — what actually helped me

So I just got my results last week and I finally passed the CIH exam on my second try. First attempt I scored a 499 — one point short. Brutal. I cried a little, not gonna lie. The second time around I completely overhauled my study approach and hit a 541, which honestly surprised me.

The biggest change was ditching the textbook-only grind and actually doing timed practice under real exam conditions. I found a solid CIH practice test resource that mirrored the ABIH blueprint pretty closely — especially for the math-heavy sections like noise dosimetry and ventilation. I also leaned hard on a structured study guide that organized topics by domain instead of just chapter by chapter, which helped me see where my weak spots actually were.

My main exam tips for anyone prepping: don't underestimate the engineering controls section, and make sure you can do the OSHA PEL/TLV calculations cold. I spent probably 180 hours total between both attempts. Happy to answer questions if anyone's in the same boat I was.

Congrats on passing! I'm sitting for mine in September and the math sections are killing me. What resource did you use for the ventilation calculations specifically? I keep blanking on the dilution ventilation formulas during timed practice. Also — how many questions per day were you doing in the final month leading up to it?

Second attempt success stories give me life right now. I failed by 12 points in March and I've been in a bit of a funk about it. One thing I'd add from my experience: the industrial hygiene program administration domain catches a lot of people off guard because it feels soft compared to the technical stuff, but there were way more questions on it than I expected. Worth giving it real time in your study guide rotation.

One point short on the first attempt — that's genuinely heartbreaking. Glad the second one worked out. For anyone reading this, the ABIH's published domain weights are your best friend. Build your study schedule around those percentages and don't treat every topic equally.
