So I just got my results last week and I finally passed the CIC on my second try. First attempt I went in pretty confident after 20 years in infection prevention and honestly got humbled fast — scored a 74 when you need a 75 to pass. I was devastated but also kind of motivated.
For round two I completely changed my approach. I spent about 8 weeks really digging into the study guide material, focusing hard on surveillance methods and outbreak investigation since those tripped me up the first time. I also started doing a CIC practice test every Sunday to track where I was weakest. That feedback loop made a huge difference — I could see my scores climbing from the low 70s up to consistently hitting 80-82 by week six.
One thing I wish someone had told me earlier: don't just memorize definitions. The exam loves to give you a scenario and make you apply the concept. So when you're reviewing exam tips or practice questions, actually think through the reasoning, not just the answer. Anyone else retaking or currently prepping? Happy to share more specifics on what resources I used.
