Finally passed my CHE exam after two attempts — here's what worked

I passed the Certified Hospitality Educator exam last month and honestly I'm still kind of in disbelief. Failed my first attempt back in February by about 8 points — I went in thinking my 12 years of teaching experience would carry me through and completely underestimated how specific the questions are around instructional design and curriculum development frameworks.

What changed the second time around: I gave myself a structured 10-week study plan instead of just reviewing my notes. I used the AHLEI study guide cover to cover, but the real game-changer was drilling with a CHE practice test regularly. Doing timed practice sets helped me figure out where my gaps actually were — turns out I was weak on adult learning theory and needs assessment methodology, not the hospitality content itself.

My exam tips for anyone prepping right now: don't skip the competency framework sections even if they seem dry, and time yourself ruthlessly during practice. I was running out of time on my first attempt because I'd linger too long on tough questions. What's everyone else's experience been with the content areas — especially the training delivery section?

The needs assessment questions got me too on my first pass. What helped me was drawing out the ADDIE model by hand a few times until the sequence was automatic. Also highly recommend finding a study partner — I did weekly calls with a colleague going for her CHE at the same time and talking through scenarios out loud made the concepts stick way better than just rereading. Two attempts isn't a failure, it's just the process for some of us.

Congrats! I'm sitting for mine in August and this is exactly what I needed to hear. I've been putting off really drilling into the instructional design stuff because I figured hospitality operations knowledge would cover most of it. Sounds like that's the wrong approach. Did you find the study guide matched pretty closely to what actually showed up on the test, or were there surprises?

Eight points off on the first try and then passing the second — that's such a common pattern with this exam. The time management piece is underrated. Flagging and moving on is a real skill you have to practice deliberately. Well done on pushing through.
