Passed my CHC exam on the second attempt — here's what actually helped

So I finally got my CHC certification last week and honestly I'm still kind of in shock. Failed my first attempt back in February by 8 points, which was crushing after putting in about three months of studying. The biggest problem was I had no idea what the actual question format was like — I'd been reading the AHIMA prep materials but they didn't prepare me for how tricky the wording gets, especially around compliance timelines and state vs. federal law distinctions.

What turned things around for me was switching to a CHC practice test format instead of just reading. Doing timed question sets made a huge difference because the real exam moves fast and I kept running out of time on my first try. I also went back to basics with a structured CHC study guide that broke down the seven core compliance elements — once those clicked, a lot of the questions started making more sense.

Happy to share my full study plan if anyone wants it. Also curious — did anyone else struggle with the healthcare fraud and abuse section? That was by far my weakest area going in.

Congrats on passing! The fraud and abuse section got me too. I spent probably 40% of my total study time on just that module. What helped me was making a one-page cheat sheet of the key statutes — False Claims Act, Stark Law, Anti-Kickback — with the penalties laid out side by side. Once I could mentally compare them quickly, the questions felt less like traps. I scored a 78 on my first attempt and was honestly relieved because I'd heard the passing rate isn't great.

The CHC exam tips I wish someone had told me sooner: don't skip the OIG work plan as a study resource, and always read every answer choice before picking one. So many wrong answers are almost right. Good luck to everyone sitting soon — it's a hard exam but totally passable with the right prep.

Can I ask how many practice questions you did total before the real thing? I'm sitting for mine in about six weeks and I'm second-guessing whether I'm ready. I've gone through maybe 300 questions so far and I'm hitting around 70% on timed sets, but I'm not sure if that's enough. The compliance program management questions keep tripping me up — specifically anything about board oversight and reporting structures. Did you find those came up a lot on the actual exam?
