Finally passed CHBT after two attempts — here's what actually worked

So I just got my results yesterday and I finally passed the CHBT exam on my second try. Honestly I was pretty devastated after failing in February — I scored a 68 and needed a 75 to pass. The first time around I just read through the handbook and figured that would be enough. Spoiler: it was not.

What made the difference the second time was actually doing structured practice. I found a solid CHBT practice test that mimicked the real format and started timing myself. Biggest thing I learned is that the behavioral health technology sections hit way harder than the intro materials suggest. I spent maybe 40 hours total over 8 weeks — about 5 hours a week — and used a CHBT study guide that broke down each domain separately instead of treating it as one big blob of content.

If you're prepping right now, my advice: don't skip the ethics and compliance questions. I underestimated those completely the first time. Happy to answer questions from anyone else in the middle of this process.

Congrats!! I'm sitting for mine in six weeks and the ethics section is exactly what I've been worried about. Can I ask which domains you felt were most heavily tested? I've been going through a CHBT study guide but it feels like some chapters get way more real-exam weight than others. Also did you find the question wording tricky or pretty straightforward?

This matches my experience almost exactly. The practice test I used had questions that felt nothing like the actual exam at first, but after about three full timed runs I started recognizing the pattern in how they phrase the wrong answers — they're designed to sound reasonable. Once I caught onto that I stopped second-guessing myself so much. Exam tips like that are honestly more valuable than just memorizing content.

40 hours over 8 weeks is a really manageable pace, thanks for breaking that down. People always say 'study a lot' but actual numbers help so much more. Saving this thread for when I start prepping next month.
