Finally passed my CH exam after two failed attempts — here's what helped

I just got my results back and I'm still kind of in shock — I passed my Certified Hospitalist (CH) exam on my third try. I want to share what actually worked because I wasted so much time on the wrong resources my first two attempts.

The biggest game-changer was switching to timed CH practice test sessions instead of just reading through the study guide passively. I'd been highlighting everything like that would magically stick. When I started doing full 60-question timed blocks, my weak spots became really obvious fast — mine were glycemic management protocols and the discharge planning stuff. I spent about 6 weeks total, maybe 90 minutes a day on weekdays, less on weekends.

For anyone prepping right now, my biggest exam tips: don't ignore the quality metrics section (I underestimated it both times I failed), and actually read the rationales on every wrong answer, not just the correct one. The why behind the wrong choices is where the real learning happens.

Quick question — did you use any specific study guide or mostly just the practice questions? I'm about 8 weeks out from my exam date and feeling pretty overwhelmed with the sheer volume of content. I've done maybe two full practice sets so far but I keep second-guessing whether I'm focusing on the right domains. The glycemic stuff you mentioned is actually one I keep getting wrong too, so maybe I need to dig into that more specifically.

Congrats! Seriously, three attempts takes real persistence. I passed on my second try last fall and I totally relate to the passive reading trap. The practice tests were what finally made me realize I didn't actually understand care transitions the way I thought I did. I was scoring in the low 60s on my first few practice rounds and ended up hitting 74% on the real thing. Rationale review is genuinely underrated advice.

This is really encouraging to read. I've been putting off scheduling my exam because I bombed a couple practice tests and got in my own head about it. Hearing that someone passed on attempt three makes me want to just go for it. Thanks for being honest about the journey instead of making it sound easy.
