CGM exam — anyone done it recently? What does the test actually cover?

I've been a general manager at a mid-size hotel for three years and my company is encouraging me to pursue the CGM certification through AH&LA. I've been looking at the study materials and I'm not finding much current information online about what the exam actually looks like in practice — most of what I find is either outdated or too vague to be useful.

From what I can gather, the exam covers seven domains: leadership, human resources, financial management, marketing, food and beverage, rooms operations, and facilities. My background is strong on rooms and F&B but I'm weakest on the financial management side, specifically yield management modeling and ownership reporting structures.

I started studying about three weeks ago, roughly an hour a day. I'm working through the AH&LA coursework that came with my application and doing practice questions at the end of each module. So far I'm averaging around 72-75% on those section quizzes, but I don't know how representative they are of the actual exam.

How long did you study before sitting for the CGM? And is the exam primarily recall-based or does it lean into scenario application? I'm hoping the operational experience I have translates, but I've been surprised before by certification exams that reward textbook knowledge over practical experience.

I took it last spring after about 10 weeks of prep at about an hour a day. The exam leans into scenario application more than pure recall, which actually helps if you've been managing a property for a while. You'll recognize most of the situations.

The financial management section trips up experienced GMs because the exam tests it from an ownership perspective, not an operator perspective. RevPAR, ADR, EBITDA analysis — spend real time on those sections.

72-75% on the module quizzes at three weeks in is a solid baseline. I'd aim to be at 80%+ before scheduling the actual exam. The AH&LA practice questions are a pretty good proxy for difficulty level.

The HR and leadership sections had more questions than their proportional weight suggests, at least based on my experience. Employment law, performance management frameworks, and disciplinary procedures came up repeatedly for me.
