Finally passed the CGFO exam after two attempts — here's what worked

So I finally got my CGFO certification last month and honestly I'm still in shock a little. Failed my first attempt back in February by about 8 points — killed me. I work as a finance director for a small municipality in Ohio and my boss has been pushing me toward this cert for two years, so the pressure was real. After that first fail I completely changed my approach.

The biggest thing that helped was finding a solid CGFO practice test that actually matched the question style on the real exam. Not just knowing the material, but getting comfortable with how they word things — governmental accounting standards, budget law questions, those tricky ethics scenarios. I also grabbed a study guide specifically focused on GFOA standards and worked through it section by section instead of trying to cram everything at once. Took me about 6 weeks of consistent studying, maybe 8-10 hours a week.

Anyone else currently prepping for this? Happy to share what specific topics tripped me up the first time. The fund accounting and GASB pronouncements sections are no joke.

Congrats! I'm sitting mine in July and the fund accounting piece is exactly what's stressing me out. I've been doing practice questions every night but I keep second-guessing myself on modified accrual vs. full accrual situations. Did you find any particular exam tips for that section? My score on practice sets keeps hovering around 71% and I need at least 75 to feel confident going in.

Thanks for posting this. Starting my prep next month and honestly had no idea where to even begin. Eight to ten hours a week for six weeks feels doable. I'll look into that study guide approach — structured beats random reviewing every time.

Two attempts is actually really common for this one — don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I passed on my second try too and I work with three people who did the same. The ethics and legal compliance module is where most people bleed points without realizing it. They're not straightforward 'what's the rule' questions, they're scenario-based and you really have to slow down and read every word carefully. That cost me my first attempt for sure.
