Finally passed my CGA exam after failing twice — here's what actually worked

So I've been lurking here for months and figured I owe it to this community to share my experience. Failed the CGA exam in October and again in February — both times I thought I was ready but the ethics and reporting sections absolutely destroyed me. I was scoring fine on the technical stuff but kept hitting 68-69% overall when I needed a 70 to pass.

What finally changed things: I stopped just reading the handbook and started actually drilling questions. Found a decent CGA practice test set that mimicked the real question style, especially the scenario-based ones where they give you a client situation and you have to pick the most appropriate response. Those are tricky because two answers always look correct. I also went through a proper study guide this time instead of just my class notes — having everything organized by domain made a huge difference for retention.

Passed last week with a 76%. Honestly cried a little. If anyone wants to talk exam tips or what topics to prioritize, ask away. Happy to help people avoid my two-year detour.

The 70% cutoff is brutal when you're hovering right below it. I passed on my second attempt too and what helped me was timing myself strictly — the real exam is tighter than you think. I'd also say don't neglect the financial reporting standards section even if you feel solid on it. They love to throw in edge cases around disclosure requirements that catch people off guard.

Congrats!! I'm sitting for mine in July and the scenario-based ethics questions are exactly what I'm dreading. Can I ask which practice test resource you used? I've been doing the official sample questions but they feel way easier than what people describe on the actual exam. Also how many hours a week were you putting in during your final push?

This is exactly the kind of post I needed to see today. Just scheduled my exam for August and I'm already stressed. Good reminder to focus on scenario questions, not just memorizing definitions. And congrats — two attempts takes real persistence.
