Finally passed my CFTC exam after two failed attempts — here's what worked

So I just got my results this morning and I actually passed. I'm still kind of in shock because I failed twice before this and was seriously questioning whether I was cut out for this career path. Third time around I completely changed my approach and I think it made all the difference.

The first two times I basically just read the Commodity Exchange Act summaries and thought that was enough. Spoiler: it's not. What finally clicked was grinding through a proper CFTC practice test bank — like actually timing myself and treating each session as the real thing. I also found a decent study guide that broke down the NFA compliance rules and position limits in plain English instead of regulatory speak. Those two topics absolutely destroyed me on my first attempt.

Anyone else going through this right now? Happy to share specifics on the study guide I used and which topic areas to prioritize. The derivatives regulations section is way heavier than the official outline suggests — budget extra time there.

This is exactly the kind of post I needed to see today. Failed my first attempt two weeks ago by four points, which stings. Good to know it's survivable. Booking my retake for next month — going all in on timed practice sets this time.

Congrats! I'm sitting mine in six weeks and the derivatives section is already giving me anxiety. Can I ask how many hours total you put in for your third attempt versus the first two? I've been doing about an hour a night but wondering if I need to ramp that up significantly. Also did you find the actual exam matched the difficulty of the practice questions you were using?

I passed on my second try last year. Honestly the best exam tip I can give anyone is don't underestimate the ethics and supervision questions — sounds basic but they're tricky because the answer choices are all plausible. I kept second-guessing myself. The practice tests helped me get comfortable with the wording. Also the real exam felt slightly easier than most third-party practice materials, which was a nice surprise.
