Finally passed my CFSP exam after two attempts — here's what helped

So I passed my CFSP last month and honestly still a little shocked. Failed my first attempt back in February by 11 points — I went in way too confident thinking my 8 years in food service would carry me through. Spoiler: it didn't. The regulatory stuff and HACCP application questions absolutely wrecked me.

Second time around I completely changed my approach. I spent about six weeks studying, maybe 45 minutes a day, and leaned heavily on a CFSP practice test to figure out where my gaps actually were. That diagnostic approach was huge — I stopped wasting time on things I already knew and drilled down on temperature controls, contamination pathways, and food defense. Found a solid CFSP study guide that broke the ServSafe manager material into testable chunks, which helped a lot more than just rereading the textbook.

Main exam tips I'd pass along: don't skip the regulatory section even if it feels dry, know your temperature danger zones cold (pun intended), and time yourself on practice questions. The real exam felt rushed to me the first time. Anyone else retaking or currently prepping? Happy to answer questions.

Congrats! I passed mine last fall and the practice tests were honestly the most important part of my prep. I did like 200-300 practice questions over 4 weeks. The ones that explain WHY an answer is wrong are worth their weight in gold. The actual exam has some tricky scenario-based questions where two answers look almost identical — drilling those taught me to slow down and read more carefully instead of going with my gut.

This mirrors my experience almost exactly. First attempt I focused way too much on the cooking temps and basically ignored food defense — that whole section caught me off guard. What study guide did you end up using? I'm about 3 weeks out from my exam date and feeling pretty nervous about the regulatory/compliance questions. Also, how many practice questions do you think you did total before you felt ready?

11 points the first time and then passing — that's a comeback story right there. The confidence trap is real with this exam. People with years of hands-on experience often underestimate the written knowledge side. Good reminder to actually study instead of just showing up.
