Finally passed my CFS exam after two attempts — here's what worked

So I finally got my Certified Funeral Service exam out of the way last month and honestly I'm still a little in shock. Failed my first attempt by 11 points back in February, which was brutal after months of prep. The problem was I'd been studying way too broadly — trying to memorize everything instead of focusing on the sections that actually carry weight on the test.

Second time around I completely changed my approach. I found a solid CFS practice test that helped me identify exactly where my weak spots were (embalming chemistry and state law were killing me). I also started timing myself because the real exam moves faster than you'd expect. Spent about 6 weeks, roughly 90 minutes a day, and drilled practice questions almost daily the last two weeks.

Curious if anyone else has gone through this twice or is currently prepping. What study materials did you find actually useful? I feel like the official study guide left a lot of gaps, especially on the business and funeral directing side.

I'm currently four weeks out from my exam and honestly kind of panicking. Did you feel like the practice tests matched the difficulty of the real thing? I've been scoring around 74-76% on practice runs and I can't tell if that's good enough or if I need to push harder. Also which sections should I be prioritizing if I only have a month left?

Congrats! I sat for mine in January and the timing thing is so real. I think I underestimated how much the arts and sciences section would trip me up. What I found helpful was making flashcards specifically for the chemical compounds in embalming — there's a surprising number of them. The CFS study guide I used had practice questions at the end of each chapter and those were way more useful than just reading the text.

The law and compliance section tripped up almost everyone in my class. Make sure you know the FTC Funeral Rule cold — price disclosure rules, itemization requirements, all of it. That stuff comes up more than you'd think and it's the kind of thing you can lock down with focused review in a few days.
