Finally passed my CFRE on the second attempt — here's what actually helped
I want to share my experience because I spent months searching for honest advice and mostly found vague encouragement. I failed my first CFRE attempt by 11 points last November. Devastating. I'd been in fundraising for eight years and genuinely thought my experience alone would carry me through. It didn't. The exam tests specific competencies in a very particular way, and real-world instincts don't always translate.
For my second attempt I completely changed my approach. I found a solid CFRE practice test that actually mimicked the question style — the scenario-based questions especially, where you have to pick the "most ethical" or "most strategic" answer. That was my weakest area. I also worked through a structured study guide that broke down all six competency areas, which helped me stop cramming randomly and actually see the gaps in my knowledge.
Biggest exam tip I can share: don't underestimate the volunteer management and stewardship sections. Everyone obsesses over major gifts and planned giving, but I lost way too many points on the governance questions. Anyone else retaking this or prepping right now? Happy to compare notes.
