CFC exam — anyone else find the strategic planning section harder than expected?

Sitting for the CFC through AAFM in about five weeks and I'm feeling okay on the core financial controller topics — internal controls, financial reporting, budgeting — but the strategic planning and leadership modules are throwing me. I've been a controller for eight years but my role has always been pretty execution-focused, not strategic-level planning.

I'm studying about 90 minutes a day and I'm roughly halfway through the official curriculum. My mock test scores are hovering around 74-76%, which is close to passing but I don't want to cut it that thin. The financial analysis and reporting sections I'm scoring above 85% on, so I know where my time needs to go.

Has anyone found good supplementary resources for the strategic side? The AAFM materials cover it but feel a bit surface-level. I've been looking at MBA-level strategy textbooks but I'm not sure if that's overkill for this exam specifically.

Also — is the exam mostly multiple choice or does it include case scenarios? I've seen conflicting info in different prep guides and I want to make sure I'm practicing the right format.

The strategic section caught me off guard too. I came in strong on technical finance and scored 71% overall on my first attempt — failed by four points. On attempt two I added two weeks specifically for strategy and leadership content and passed at 81%. Don't underestimate it.

It's predominantly multiple choice with some scenario-based questions woven in. The scenarios aren't super complex but they do require you to apply concepts rather than just recall definitions. Good news is the technical sections are very scorable if you're already a working controller.

MBA-level strategy texts are probably overkill. I used a business strategy primer — something like a condensed MBA reader — and that was more than enough. The exam doesn't go deep on frameworks; it's more about recognizing the right approach in a given controller context.
