Finally passed CFB after two attempts — here's what actually worked

So I just got my results back this morning and I'm still kind of in shock — I passed the Certified Floodplain Broker exam on my second try. First attempt I scored a 71, which stung because I genuinely thought I'd studied enough. Spent about three weeks on the NFIP manuals, highlighted everything, and still walked out feeling like I'd missed something fundamental about the rating methodology sections.

What changed this time around was being way more intentional. I found a decent CFB practice test online that actually mirrored the question style — the wording on the real exam is oddly specific and that threw me off the first time. I also printed out a CFB study guide focused specifically on flood zone determinations and BFE calculations, which are heavily tested. Logged about 45 hours of prep over six weeks this time.

Happy to share exam tips or talk through the trickier sections if anyone's preparing. The community here helped me a lot when I was panicking after my first fail, so wanted to pay it forward. What areas are people struggling with most right now?

Second attempt success stories are my favorite to read honestly. I failed mine in March and have been dreading getting back on the horse. The flood zone determination questions were where I lost the most points — there were like four or five scenarios where I second-guessed myself into the wrong answer. How did you approach locking in those concepts? Just repetition or did you find a way to actually visualize the zones?

Congrats! I'm sitting for it in about six weeks and the rating tables are absolutely killing me. Every time I think I understand the V-zone calculations something trips me up on practice questions. Did you find any particular resource for those? I've been using FEMA's own materials but honestly they read like stereo instructions from 1987.

The exam tip about question wording is so real. Half the battle is figuring out what they're actually asking. I circled back to anything with "except" or "not" in the stem on my attempt and it saved me at least three or four points. You'll do great the second time around.
