CESP exam – how much does the vocational rehab and benefits counseling content actually show up?

I've been working as an employment specialist for about 3 years and I'm finally sitting for the CESP. I thought field experience would carry me through most of the exam but I've been humbled by the practice questions. A lot of the theoretical framework around supported employment is more exam-specific than I expected.

I started prepping 7 weeks ago, about 1.5 hours a day. Exam domains cover supported employment foundations, job development, job coaching, benefits counseling, and professional conduct. My strongest areas are job development and coaching since that's my daily work. Where I'm weaker is benefits counseling — SSI/SSDI interaction with earned income, ABLE accounts, and Plan to Achieve Self-Support rules are complex and I didn't use them much in practice.

Practice tests have me at about 73–76%, which feels okay given the passing threshold is around 70%. But the official APSE practice exam felt much harder than third-party materials. Some scenario questions involve ambiguous client situations and I second-guess myself a lot on those.

Exam is in 2 weeks. Anyone who's done the CESP recently — how much did the VR system navigation content come up? I've been skimming it but haven't gone deep.

For benefits counseling you don't need to be a CWIC. Know how wages affect SSI, what the Ticket to Work program does, and the basic ABLE account rules. That's usually enough for the exam.

I passed on first attempt with about 5 weeks of prep. The official APSE materials are the closest match to actual exam difficulty — if you're scoring 73% on those you're probably in good shape.

VR system navigation came up more than I expected. Know the referral process and roles of different agencies — not super deep, but enough to distinguish between answer choices.

The scenario questions are written from a supported employment philosophy standpoint. When in doubt, the answer that centers the client's choice and self-determination is usually right.
