CEC exam — is the admissions consulting knowledge tested deeply?

Taking the Certified Educational Consultant exam in a few months and I want to understand how specific the admissions process questions actually get. I've been an independent counselor for 3 years so the college process is second nature to me, but I'm less sure about the ethical standards and professional practice portions.

The IECA guidelines are something I've read but never been formally tested on. And the special populations section — students with disabilities, international students, students in crisis — how deep does that go?

I've been doing maybe 10 hours of prep a week. Is that enough or should I be pushing harder given the breadth of the content?

Also does the exam weight the college admissions content heavily over K-12 placement and therapeutic programs?

The ethical standards section is substantial — I'd say 20-25% of what I saw. IECA's Principles of Good Practice are tested directly, not just in spirit. Know the conflict of interest provisions and what constitutes appropriate versus inappropriate compensation structures.

10 hours a week for 8-10 weeks is solid prep if it's focused. Don't spread yourself too thin across every topic area.

I passed it last year with 4 years of independent practice. My 3 years of experience meant the admissions logic was easy but the business practices section — fee structures, contract language, marketing ethics — that was less obvious.

Make sure you understand the IECA stance on guaranteed admissions promises and how to communicate realistic expectations to families. Those scenario questions are very specific.

College admissions content is the largest block but therapeutic and special needs placements came up more than I expected — probably 15% for me. International students and boarding school placement had dedicated questions too.

The special populations questions focus more on appropriate referral and resource knowledge than clinical detail. You don't need to know how to run an IEP evaluation, just when to refer and to whom.
