CDO certification exam — anyone done this recently and can describe the format?

I'm a data director at a mid-size financial services firm and my company is pushing for me to get certified before Q3. I've been in data leadership for about 6 years but formal certification in this space is relatively new territory. The CDO certification exam is hard to find detailed prep info on compared to something like PMP or AWS, so I'm going in with limited visibility into the actual format.

From the official outline it looks like the exam covers data strategy, governance, monetization, and organizational change — which maps reasonably well to what I do day-to-day. I'm less confident about the data monetization section specifically since we don't run external data products at my company. That's probably 20-25% of the content from what I can tell.

I've been doing 1 hour a day for the last 4 weeks and my self-assessment on practice questions is landing around 65-70%. I have about 5 weeks until my scheduled date. Is that trajectory realistic, and does anyone know if the exam is more scenario-based or concept-testing?

Also wondering how much the financial services context matters versus general data strategy — whether I'd be penalized for thinking too industry-specifically on open-ended scenarios.

It's heavily scenario-based rather than pure recall. Almost every hard question is structured around what a CDO should do in a specific organizational context. Your 6 years of actual leadership experience probably translates better than raw study hours for those types of questions.

The data monetization section was the one I spent the most extra time on too. Reading a few publicly available data product strategy write-ups from real companies — not academic, just business cases — gave me the vocabulary to answer those questions even without personal experience in external data products. Industry-specific thinking doesn't hurt as long as you can generalize the principle.

5 weeks at 1 hour a day is only 35 more hours. If you can bump to 1.5 hours on weekdays and do a longer session on weekends you'd be in better shape. At 65-70% self-assessed with 5 weeks left, I'd want more runway personally.

I took it last November. The format was 100 questions in 2.5 hours. Roughly 60% scenario-based and 40% conceptual. The organizational change management section had more questions than I expected — probably 18-20 of the 100.
