Finally passed CDM after two attempts — here's what actually worked

I failed my first CDM attempt back in March by 11 points and honestly wanted to give up. I'd studied for about six weeks using just the ANFP study materials and thought that was enough. Spoiler: it wasn't. The exam hit me with a ton of procurement and financial management questions I wasn't remotely prepared for.

Second attempt I completely changed my approach. I spent eight weeks this time, focused heavily on the cost control and sanitation/safety domains since those tripped me up most. I also started doing a CDM practice test every few days to get comfortable with the question format — that honestly made the biggest difference. The wording on real exam questions is tricky and you have to practice reading them carefully.

Passed with a 78 on my retake. If anyone is prepping right now and feeling overwhelmed, I'm happy to share what my week-by-week study schedule looked like. The exam is totally passable if you're strategic about it.

Congrats! I'm sitting for mine in July and this is exactly what I needed to hear. I've been using a CDM study guide but honestly haven't touched any practice questions yet — sounds like I need to fix that ASAP. Did you find the procurement section as brutal as everyone says? That's my weak spot too and I'm a little nervous about it.

The financial management domain destroyed me on my first attempt too. One exam tip that helped me: don't just memorize formulas, understand WHY you're calculating food cost percentage or labor cost ratio. The exam will give you a scenario and you have to apply the concept, not just recall a number. Once I shifted to that mindset my practice scores jumped like 8 points.

11 points off and you came back stronger — that's the CDM grind right there. The retake experience is real. Most people I know in dietary management passed on their second try. Don't let the first attempt shake your confidence too much.
