Finally passed CDI exam on second attempt — here's what actually helped

After failing by 7 points the first time, I went back to basics and completely changed my study approach. I'd been using a random mix of resources and honestly just winging the clinical validation questions. Big mistake. The second time around I spent about 6 weeks focused, roughly 2 hours per day, and made sure I actually understood the why behind each CDI practice test question instead of just memorizing answers.

The biggest shift for me was focusing on the CC/MCC optimization and physician query sections — those showed up way more than I expected. My target was 80%+ on practice exams before I'd schedule the retake. Once I consistently hit that, I finally felt ready. If you're just starting out, don't underestimate the study guide material on mortality and morbidity reviews either. That stuff is everywhere on the actual test.

Happy to answer questions if anyone is in the same boat I was six months ago. What topics are tripping people up the most right now?

The exam tips about focusing on POA indicators saved me so much time. I kept second-guessing myself until I realized the questions usually have a clear right answer if you just slow down and apply the guidelines. Don't overthink it!

Congrats! The physician query section killed me on my first attempt too. What I found helpful was role-playing the queries out loud — sounds silly but it made the reasoning stick. I also printed out the query templates and taped them above my desk for the last two weeks. Passed with an 82 on my first try after doing that, so don't skip those scenarios.

Quick question — how far out did you schedule your exam after hitting that 80% mark consistently? I've been hovering around 75-78% on timed sets and I'm not sure if I should push the date back. I feel like I understand the concepts but the time pressure just wrecks me. Did that get better for you or did you find ways to manage it during the actual test?
