Finally passed my CDCP exam after two attempts — here's what worked

So I just got my results back and I actually passed this time. Honestly couldn't believe it when I saw the score. First attempt back in February I went in way underprepared — thought my work experience would carry me through and I was wrong. Failed by about 12 points, which was a gut punch.

This time around I gave myself eight weeks and actually followed a structured plan. The biggest game-changer for me was doing a solid CDCP practice test every few days toward the end of my prep. Not just reading through study materials but actually simulating test conditions — timer running, no notes, the whole thing. Helped me figure out I was weak on data governance and privacy frameworks specifically.

Anyone else currently studying for this cert? Happy to share my full study guide breakdown or swap notes on which topic areas are worth the most points. The exam tips I picked up the second time around were pretty different from what I'd read online, so I want to make sure others aren't walking in blind like I did the first time.

Congrats on passing! I'm about six weeks out from my exam date and data governance is killing me too. I've been using a mix of the official body of knowledge and a few third-party resources but honestly nothing has clicked as well as just grinding practice questions. What resource did you find had the most realistic question style? The ones I've been using feel way too straightforward compared to what I've heard the real exam is like.

Two attempts is nothing to be ashamed of — I know people who've taken it three times. The privacy law section is brutal if you're not from a compliance background. I passed on my first try but I put in probably 80 hours over 10 weeks, which felt like a lot. My advice: don't skip the ethics domain even though it seems obvious. I almost did and a coworker told me last minute it's weighted heavier than you'd think.

This is exactly what I needed to read today. Taking mine in three weeks and starting to spiral a little. Knowing someone came back from a first fail and still got it done is genuinely motivating. What was your target score going in?
